Pass by the Book
Free practice tests for the California DMV exams and the US citizenship test, written from the official handbooks, in eight languages.
Free · No account · Works in any browser, and from the home screen of a phone · English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian, Armenian, Hindi and Punjabi
Every question from the official book, every answer with its page
Most practice sites recycle questions from memory or from each other. Pass by the Book does the opposite: each question is written from a specific passage of the official handbook for that test, and the answer links to the page it comes from, so you can read the original wording yourself. For the citizenship test the questions and the accepted answers are the ones USCIS publishes, word for word. If the site and the handbook ever disagree, the handbook is right.
The tests
- California driver’s license knowledge test (Class C): 1,031 questions from the California Driver’s Handbook, road signs drawn as on the road
- Motorcycle knowledge test (Class M): 514 questions from the California Motorcycle Handbook
- Commercial driver’s license (CDL) knowledge tests: 2,396 questions across general knowledge, air brakes, combination vehicles, passenger, doubles and triples, tank, hazardous materials and school bus
- RV and trailer law test (noncommercial Class A and B): 406 questions from the Recreational Vehicles and Trailers Handbook
- Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) test: 144 questions from the California DOJ study guide
- US naturalization civics test, 2025 version: all 128 USCIS questions with the accepted answers, flashcards both ways, an exam that stops at 12 right or 9 wrong like the real one, the 65/20 version, and the names of your state’s senators, governor and capital
- US naturalization civics test, 2008 version: the 100 questions for everyone who filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025
- English test of the naturalization interview: read a sentence aloud and the browser checks every word, write one from dictation, with the two official USCIS word lists
How you study
- Practice: short sets of questions with the explanation and the handbook page after each answer
- Exam: a fresh test every time, in the length and with the passing score of the real one
- Mistakes and Marathon: what you missed comes back until you get it right, or go through the whole bank once
- Flashcards for the citizenship test: the question, then every answer USCIS accepts, as at the interview
- Progress stays in your browser: no account, no sign-up, and a one-line form under every answer to report a mistake
Questions & answers
Is Pass by the Book free?expand_more
Yes. Every test, every mode and every language is free, with no account and no sign-up. Your progress stays in your browser.
Where do the questions come from?expand_more
Each question is written from a specific passage of the official handbook for that test, and the answer links to the page it comes from. Nothing is taken from memory or from other practice sites. For the citizenship test the questions and the accepted answers are the ones USCIS publishes, word for word.
Which tests does it cover?expand_more
The California DMV knowledge tests for the Class C driver's license, the motorcycle license, the commercial driver's license and the noncommercial Class A and B license for RVs and trailers, the California Firearm Safety Certificate test, and the US naturalization civics test in its 2025 and 2008 versions, together with the English reading and writing test of the interview.
How does it prepare for the US citizenship test?expand_more
With all 128 questions of the 2025 test and the 100 of the 2008 test, each with the answers USCIS accepts. Flashcards work like the interview: you read the question, say the answer, then see the accepted list. The practice exam follows the rules of the real one, 20 questions that stop at 12 right or 9 wrong, with a separate 65/20 version. The questions about your state show the names of its senators, its governor and its capital. The English test page has sentences to read aloud and to write from dictation, built only from the official USCIS word lists.
What languages is it in?expand_more
English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian, Armenian, Hindi and Punjabi. The citizenship questions and answers are translated into all of them, with the English answer kept beside the translation, and the 65/20 exam can be taken in your language, as at the interview.
Does it work on a phone?expand_more
Yes, in any browser, and it can be added to the home screen like an app. Pages you have opened keep working without a connection.
Is it connected to the DMV or USCIS?expand_more
No. Pass by the Book is made by KirsuLab LLC and is not affiliated with any government agency. The real tests draw from question banks that are not public, so these are not the real questions, but they cover the same handbooks the real questions are taken from.
