Left and right speaker test

Play a tone on one side at a time and hear at once if a speaker is quiet, dead or swapped.

Six colours, as in the app

Turn the volume down to about 20–30% before you press Play. Pure tones sound quieter than they are.

The app adds a bass test sweep, a polarity check for speaker wiring and a hearing check. Every feature is free.

How to use it

  • Set the volume low and press Play. The tone starts on the left side only
  • Tap Right to move it to the other side, and Both to hear them together
  • Try 100 Hz, 1k and 10k to check the woofer, the middle and the tweeter
  • A side that stays silent or sounds distorted points to the speaker, the cable or the balance setting

Hearing safety

A pure continuous tone puts all its energy on one frequency, and it feels quieter than it is. Start with the volume low and raise it slowly. Never play a test tone loud through headphones, and take extra care around 2 to 5 kHz, where the ear is most sensitive.

Questions & answers

How do I know if my left and right channels are swapped?expand_more

The page opens on Left. Press Play. If the sound comes from your right speaker or right ear cup, the channels are swapped, either in the cable, the wiring or the system settings.

One side is quieter. Is the speaker broken?expand_more

Check the balance setting of your computer or phone first, it is often off centre. If the balance is centred and one side is still quieter at every frequency, the speaker or its cable is at fault.

Which frequencies should I try?expand_more

440 Hz and 1 kHz are easy to hear on any speaker. 100 Hz checks the woofer and 5 to 10 kHz the tweeter. A speaker that plays the middle but not the top usually has a dead tweeter.

How do I check that two speakers are wired the same way?expand_more

Play a low tone through both, then flip the polarity of one channel. If the bass gets thinner, the wiring matches. If it gets fuller, one speaker is wired backwards. The app does this with one switch.
