Speaker cleaner tone
A low 165 Hz tone that shakes splashed water out of a phone speaker grille. Press Play, then turn the volume up.
Turn the volume down to about 20–30% before you press Play. Pure tones sound quieter than they are.
The app has the speaker cleaner ready in its presets, plus a bass test and a hearing check. Every feature is free.
How to use it
- Hold the phone with the speaker grille facing down, so the water has somewhere to go
- Press Play, then turn the phone's volume all the way up
- Let it play for 10 to 30 seconds and wipe off any drops that appear on the grille
- Repeat two or three times, then leave the phone to dry before you charge it
If the sound is still muffled after a few rounds, the water is probably inside the case, where a tone cannot reach. Switch the phone off and let it dry for a day.
Hearing safety
A pure continuous tone puts all its energy on one frequency, and it feels quieter than it is. Start with the volume low and raise it slowly. Never play a test tone loud through headphones, and take extra care around 2 to 5 kHz, where the ear is most sensitive.
Questions & answers
Does a speaker cleaner sound really work?expand_more
For a few drops after rain, a sink or a shower, usually yes. A low tone moves the speaker cone a long way on every cycle and pushes the water out through the grille. It does not fix a phone that has been under water, and it does nothing for a speaker clogged with dust.
Why 165 Hz?expand_more
It is low enough for a big cone movement and still loud on a small phone speaker. It is close to the tone Apple Watch plays for Water Eject. Anything from about 150 to 200 Hz does much the same, so the buttons above the Play button offer 150 and 200 as well.
Is it safe to play it at full volume?expand_more
Through the phone's own speaker, yes, for 10 to 30 seconds at a time. A phone speaker cannot get loud enough to hurt your ears at arm's length. Do not play it loud through headphones, and do not plug in a charger until the phone is dry.
Does it work on an iPhone?expand_more
Yes. Turn the volume up and press Play. On older versions of iOS, turn Silent Mode off first, because the browser stays quiet while the phone is silenced.
